it must be love

Quite, quite early this morning (like 3:30, and again at 5:30) Harry Cat was making noises of a variety he never has before, a sort of short yipping "you've got to listen to me" mew, which I ignored sleepily as I got up and let him out both times (yes, I got up TWICE). When I was closer to waking, I opened the door once again to discover a dead squirrel on the threshold. The poor thing didn't appear to be wounded, but as the munchkins declare in the Wizard of Oz, he really was sincerely dead. I think Harry wanted me to think that he brought it for me.

Such a brave little cat.

fun with lentils

I keep thinking about Neil from the Young Ones moaning about having to cook the lentils. Well, this isn't such a bad way to cook them. And this recipe is completely flatmate-free.

Put a 1-lb. bag of rinsed lentils into your crock pot and pour over 3 cups of chicken stock (go ahead and cheat and use bouillon if you wish) and add a few chopped carrots, 1 chopped onion, and a couple of stalks of celery, chopped. Stir in a clove or two of minced garlic, a couple teaspoons of ground cumin, and a little ground oregano. If you are not vegetarian and you want some extra protein, slice 1 lb. of a nice sausage (I used Portuguese linguica) and stir that in too. Simmer on low for 6 hours or on high for 3 hours. Bon appetit!
