Spiced wine

In celebration of the first day o' fall, I'm sharing the wine recipe that makes me happiest these days.

1 lg bottle red wine such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot (not too dry)
2 lemons
2 oranges
1 large apple
3 or 4 whole cloves
4 cinnamon sticks
1 cup sugar

Put the sugar in a coffee mug and pour over enough boiling water to dissolve. Add cloves and cinnamon sticks and pour into a large pitcher or jug. Juice the lemons and oranges into the sugar syrup mixture and pour the wine over it all. Stir and allow to steep for a little while (the longer it stands, the more the spices will be noticeable). Roughly dice the apple and add to the mixture. Serve with or without seltzer in a sturdy glass or mug. The apple pieces may be fished out and nibbled at your leisure.
